چکیده
conclusions according to the results of this study, this increase could be due to higher fuel consumption, usage of gasoline in vehicles, oil industry, and steel and heavy industries in ahwaz. the risk of mortality and morbidity were detected at the current concentrations of air pollutants. results according to the findings, the concentration of sulfur dioxide in ahvaz had an annual average of 51 μg/m3. sum of the numbers of hospital admissions for respiratory diseases attributed to sulfur dioxide was 25 cases in 2012. approximately, 5% of the total hospital admissions for respiratory disease and respiratory mortality happened when sulfur dioxide concentration was more than 10 mg/m3. materials and methods data collections were performed by ahvaz meteorological organization and the department of environment. sampling was performed for 24 hours in four stations. methods of sampling and analysis were according to us environmental protection agency (epa) guideline. afterwards, we processed the raw data including instruction set correction of averaging, coding and filtering by excel software and then, the impact of meteorological parameters were converted as the input file to the airq model. finally, we calculated the health effects of exposure to sulfur dioxide. background sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas, released from burning of coal, high-sulfur coal,s and diesel fuel. sulfur dioxide harms human health by reacting with the moisture in the nose, nasal cavity and throat and this is the way by which it destroys the nerves in the respiratory system. objectives the aim of this study was to focus on identifying the effects associated with sulfur dioxide on health in ahvaz, iran.

Letter to the Editor: Applications Air Q Model on Estimate Health Effects Exposure to Air Pollutants
Epidemiologic studies in worldwide have measured increases in mortality and morbidity associated with air pollution (1-3). Quantifying the effects of air pollution on the human health in urban area causes an increasingly critical component in policy discussion (4-6). Air Q model was proved to be a valid and reliable tool to predicts health effects related to criteria pollutants (particula...
متن کاملStatistical Analysis-Driven Risk Assessment of Criteria Air Pollutants: A Sulfur Dioxide Case Study
A 7-step method (with 25 sub-steps) to assess risk of air pollutants is introduced. These steps are: pre-considerations, sampling, statistical analysis, exposure matrix and likelihood, doseresponse matrix and likelihood, total risk evaluation, and discussion of findings. All mentioned words and expressions are wellunderstood; however, almost all steps have been modified, improved, and coupled i...
متن کاملAlteration of Extracellular Enzymes in Pinto Bean Leaves upon Exposure to Air Pollutants, Ozone and Sulfur Dioxide.
Diamine oxidase and peroxidase, associated with the wall in pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var Pinto) leaves, can be washed out by vacuum infiltration and assayed without grinding the leaf. The diamine oxidase activity is inhibited in vivo by exposure of the plants to ozone (dose of 0.6 microliters per liter x hour), whereas the peroxidase activity associated with the wall space is stimulate...
متن کاملCell type specificity of female lung cancer associated with sulfur dioxide from air pollutants in Taiwan: An ecological study
BACKGROUND Many studies have examined the association between air pollutants (including sulfur dioxide [SO2], carbon monoxide [CO], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], nitric oxide [NO], ozone [O3], and particulate matter < 10 μm [PM10]) and lung cancer. However, data from previous studies on pathological cell types were limited, especially for SO2 exposure. We aimed to explore the association between SO2 ...
متن کاملAssessing the Effectiveness of Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Dioxide Pollutants due to Abadan Oil Refinery on Hospital Areas Using CALPUFF Model in 2018: A Descriptive Study
Background and Objectives: Hospitals as one of the most important sensitive populated areas must be located in areas within standard air quality. The aim of this study was assessing Abadan hospitals outdoor air quality affected by oil refinery using CALPUFF (California Puff) model. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was performed on the dispersion of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitroge...
متن کاملCriteria air pollutants and toxic air pollutants.
This review presents a brief overview of the health effects and exposures of two criteria pollutants--ozone and particulate matter--and two toxic air pollutants--benzene and formaldehyde. These pollutants were selected from the six criteria pollutants and from the 189 toxic air pollutants on the basis of their prevalence in the United States, their physicochemical behavior, and the magnitude of...
